Mykal Kilgore - Name - White

Credits and Liner Notes

This is a story about A Man Born Black. Maybe you know him. Maybe you are him. He’simportant and valuable. He’s misunderstood and underestimated. He makes bad decisions. He has good intentions. He’s a human being.

This is a celebration of A Man Born Black. His body. His mind. His voice. His soul.

This is an invitation from A Man Born Black. This work is meant for everyone’s ears. It’s not too thick, nor is it ever watered down. It can be romantic and political, theatrical and raw. It’s meant to be all of those things. Its intent is to make you think, feel, and sing along.

This is a thank you.

Signed,

In Mykal's Own Words

I used to dream about what my ‘Thank Yous” for my album would look like. When I was little, I would write them on the backs of notebooks, or I’d write them on napkins and stuff them in folders with every intention to keep them until I finally recorded. It’s been years since those days, and those scribblings are all lost – but my heart is still skipping a beat right now as I write these.

David and Jamison, WE DID IT!!!!! Y’all are the teammates of my dreams, and I am so thankful that God gave you to me! Over the past few years, I’ve had so many likes, retweets, comments, mentions, reposts, and hashtags that have encouraged me to keep going and to push myself. I am eternally grateful for every person that has listened to my work; thank you. All of your love has made me a better artist and, at times, a better person. My FSU School of Music family, especially Dr. Fenton, I love you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for not only educating me, but also for investing in me. Your mark on my life is indelible. I need to say thank you to the entire city of Nashville. I am the most inspired when I am there. Thank you for truly being Music City. My MDP and Gary Musick family, thank you all for giving a wild card the opportunity to grow as an entertainer. Matt and Gary… you fellas are heroes. Voodoo and Luscious… you ladies are legends. I am extremely blessed with having a humongous chosen family, and I want to thank each and every one of them. Greg (Croissant Dogs), Jason (People get ready…), Tonya (Remember when I was the first person you talked to on your birthday?), Mychael (those matching PJs), Jamaris (Jesus loves you so much), Jasmyne (Ruthie Mae McClaine), Aaron (I’ll never stop doing that when we cross the street), Joe (You didn’t know how tired you was…), Trumaine (My personal Darkchild), Jarrett (Dominion, Dominion…).

You all have been the sincerest form of God’s love in my life. Thank you for loving the least lovable parts of me. Thank you for helping me when I got it wrong. Thank you for always cheering when I got it right. Thank you for seeing me and STILL loving me. You all have my heart forever. I am doubly blessed to have a humungous given family as well. Brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandparents, uncles, and aunts. My love for you all is in every lyric, every melody, every breath. You all are my reason for everything. Alysha, Sade, Sonya — my princesses, thank you for
sharing me with the world. Aunt Mel and Uncle Dexter, I don’t know when it happened, but I definitely turned into an almost perfect mixture of you two almost perfect people. I love you two so much for never giving up on our family, or me. I also want to thank my angels: Alyce, Fred, Jose, Dwight, Mitchell, and Sonia. Your prayers are why I can fly. Grandma, I’ll never forget what you told me. Mom, I’ll never forget what you taught me. Granddaddy, I’ll never forget how you raised me. And to my creator, who loved me first and best—

How can I say thanks
For the things You have done for me?
Things so undeserved
Yet You gave to prove Your love for me;
The voices of a million angels
Could not express my gratitude
All that I am and ever hope to be
I owe it all to Thee
To God be the glory
To God be the glory
To God be the glory
For the things He has done

Amen
